Epictetus

Epictetus was a Stoic philosopher, born as a slave, but set free when he was around 18, who was lame because of maltreatement as a slave, and who studied and taught philosophy in Rome.

The texts we have from him are the Discourses and the Manual, both of which are in fact notes, written in Greek, taken by his pupil Flavius Arrianus.
