Categorematic: Property of
terms: A term is categorematic iff it has a meaning when standing by
itself, as contrasted with a syncategorematic term: A term that has no
meaning when standing by itself.
A typical example of a
categorematic term is "elephant"; typical examples of a syncategorematic
terms are "of", "the", "in".
The distinction and terminology dates from the Scholastics. It is
useful if not precise.
