Hi Mark and others,

As to Wessely himself

S.W. who doesn't dare discuss with MM - is MM's guess

"
I am not here to comment on the main theme of your blog, but to take issue with your comment “Prof Simon Wessely is beyond the pale for some sufferers because, as I understand it, he doesn’t allow the possibility of a physiological cause”

In fact I very much allow the possibility of a physiological cause. Like most psychiatrists, as I have written elsewhere, I believe that many disorders that we treat, often as a result of the way in which professions have emerged rather than for any more coherent reason, have physiological causes. Myself and probably the majority of my colleagues think for example that schizophrenia and bipolar disorders are primarily either neurodevelopmental or genetic disorders of the brain.

We have not found such clear cut evidence of either brain abnormalities or genetic disorder in CFS, but there is no doubt that there is dysfunction of the central nervous system and equally no doubt that there are genetic contributions as well, if not as strong as those found in other disorders.
"

This is much like the inquisition against Galileo - Wessely playing the part of the inquisition or the then pope:

"In fact I very much allow the possibility of a physiological cause."

Note both the gracious "allow" and the carefully restrained "the possibility": There is allowance for the possibility that copper may conduct electricity, rather than a choir of angels at the Lord's behest.

Next, as to:

"Like most psychiatrists, as I have written elsewhere, I believe that many disorders that we treat, often as a result of the way in which professions have emerged rather than for any more coherent reason, have physiological causes. "

Spoken like Torquemada - and the whole notion that "many disorders that we treat" (somehow, eventually, possibly may) "have physiological causes" is just plain Jesuitical nonsense, on the line that, yes indeed, The Holy Mother Church of Psychobabble is willing to "allow" that physical events (somehow, eventually, possibly may) "have" physical "causes".

Next, as to:

"Myself and probably the majority of my colleagues think for example that schizophrenia and bipolar disorders are primarily either neurodevelopmental or genetic disorders of the brain."

"I , the famous KCL-psycho S.W." am remarkably enlightened, scientifically speaking, is "Myself's" subtext - who conveniently forgets that what he in 2010 claims as true of "probably the majority of my colleagues " has been the right scientific approach since over 60 years.

Then as to:

"We have not found such clear cut evidence of either brain abnormalities or genetic disorder in CFS, but there is no doubt that there is dysfunction of the central nervous system and equally no doubt that there are genetic contributions as well, if not as strong as those found in other disorders.

First note the royal "We" - whereas Wessely ("We sell it"-psycho-rot to suckers?) really is NOT the guy who cold see or recognize "brain abnormalities or genetic disorder" even if they were served up to him on a Petri-plate in clear preparation: He just doesn't know the science, although he pretends to.

Also, the hidden dirt here is that Wessely for decades has made it impossible for any real research money to go to real scientists searching and finding "clear cut evidence of either brain abnormalities or genetic disorder in CFS", whereas "there is no doubt that there is dysfunction of the central nervous system " doubtlessly has to be understood along the lines that there is a major logical, scientifical, moral dysfunctional series of lies and delusions in Simon's brain iff there is no such dysfunctional set in mine - as The Psychiatric KCL-Psycho himself has outlined:

Studies in MEdical Sadism - 7:
Professor Simon Wessely's many mental issues (P.S.)

Finally as to:

"and equally no doubt that there are genetic contributions as well"

Presumably my dysfunctional belief that professor Simon Wessely has a dysfunctional rationality and a dysfunctional morality is contributed to by my genes as his craziness by his. (Well, my father seems to have proven to be the kind of man Simon's father was not, alas, but he and I can have a nice debate on that on my site, since one of my Scientific Hypotheses is that clever Simon, who might have had the intellect of a good art historian, turned to psychiatry because his dad maltreated him - for this is a well-documented fact about many with his background, unfortunately indeed.)

In brief:

Of late years the weasely Wessely has been redefining his position and that of the kind of psychiatry he stands for to this effect:

(1) There are a body&brain + a mind&soul (Ockham, Galileo and science be damned: may they burn in hell!)
(2) Where real scientists do yet not know the real physical answers about problems involving the body&brain, the Wesselyte school of psychiatry affirms that the Wesselyte school of psychiatry do ("therefore", in their psycho-"logic") know that these problems are all due to dysfunctional belief systems in the mind&soul
(3) against which the psychic geniuses of the Wesselyte school of psychiatry have The Final Solution of GET + CBT (for if you qua KCL-graduate know you do not know the physical cause of a patients suffering The KCL-Warranted Cure of the Wessely-LP-KCL-school of Moral Medicine is... to kick the patient in the balls or the teeth as hard as they can, while screaming loudly that physical causality is a mental delusion the belief in which just proves the patient is a malingerer and a fraud who deserves to be kicked GET-wise and brainwashed CBT-wise).

Just waking up, but I'd love to debate Wessely in court: Would be great fun and probably would get me a lot of money too, for reasons all British patients with ME should be aware of, while documenting themselves as to what the NHS, NICE and their doctors do or try to do to them:

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
http://www.maartensz.org/log/2010/NL100119b.htm

Article 22.

* Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

Article 25.

* (1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

O and as to:

Article 1.

* All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Personally, I don't think Simon Wessely, at his age, after his career, is genuinely "endowed with reason and conscience ", simply because for the last decades he has acted towards persons with ME (and others) in a spirit of malice and falsehood, quite purposively and intentionally, unless he is genuinely mad, e.g. because he has a tumor where others have the neuronal networks for morality and honesty.

Best wishes,

Maarten.
