me+ME: Year 35  & The Pushers + The barbarian Dutch

I have seen many medical doctors in my life, and the vast majority of them behaved more like shamans or cheats than like scientists - and indeed, a modern medical education is not so much a scientific education as it is a practical course to learn to prescribe pills, make diagnoses, and refer to colleagues in a somewhat rational manner, and profit by that.

About ME/CFS

Introduction:

The first file of this year was Nederlog 2013: Updates for the new year, and this is the second, also about something I wrote before on this date: I am ill since January 1, 1979.

1.
Year 35 of M.E./F.M.

This is the thirty-ifth year of being ill with M.E./F.M., as my first diagnosis termed it, most correctly in my view.

That first diagnosis was in 1989, when I first had heard about M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), in a program on BBC World Service, and informed the excellent G.P. I had at the time, who knew me and my circumstances fairly well, and who added the F.M. (Fibromyalgia), because she knew more about that than about M.E. and thought that, especially in view of the pains I had, it might as well be that, and also might better enable me to get some help.

I got no help ever since and the main reason must be the occupational sickness that goes by the name of medical sadism aka psychiatry:

If you know you are a sadist, and you are not stupid, then becoming a medical doctor must be your number one priority, and
becoming a psychiatrist fits your personal pathology best.

Once a psychiatrist you can incarcerate people for life, you can drug them against their will, you can give them electroshocks, you can effectively deny them all their human rights, you can put them in straight jackets, and tell all manner of lies about them in the name of "the medical science of psychiatry" that supposedly justify your abuses of them - and you'll be thanked and looked up to by all manner of naive laymen because you are a medical doctor and your own special brand of medical sadism has been accepted as a moral medical science, and you are the one who is supposed to know all manner of things about the psyche that laymen don't - which as it happens is bullshit of the same quality as His Holiness The Pope having a personal line to God Himself, but then there are more than a billion laymen who believe that (too), while everyone is forced to follow authorities of some kind, whether true or false, in many kinds of things, or else forego any help and any social support, because all authorities, whether true or false, are authorities because they are believed by people who are not capable of judging their claims rationally, indeed just as priests and clergy are accepted.

Therefore being a psychiatrist must be a sadist's heaven [2], but these days, and since DSM-III, there are even more benefits to the practitioners of the craft, besides being able to do with defenseless people as they pretty well please:

Since decades now, being a psychiatrist involves the allowance for being a legal pusher of the most atrocious drugs, all for profit, often without any truly rational or empirical proof that the drugs that are being prescribed by the millions are good for anything else than being hugely profitable to their prescribers and producers:
Ms Olsen's website, linked above, says:
Gwen Olsen spent fifteen years as a sales rep in the pharmaceutical industry working for health care giants including Johnson & Johnson, Syntex Labs, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Abbott Laboratories and Forest Laboratories.
(...)
Everyone is at risk for a prescription drug tragedy:
Gwen offers an insider’s knowledge of dangers from the pharmaceutical industry. Her poignant autobiographical journey through the darkness of mental illness and the catastrophic consequences that lurk in medicine cabinets around the country offers an honest glimpse into alarming statistics and a health care system ranked last among nineteen industrialized nations worldwide. As a former sales rep for Pharma, Gwen learned firsthand how an unprecedented number of lethal drugs are unleashed onto an unsuspecting public.
And it turned out that some of the craftiest and most sadistic shrinks have been manipulating the health care authorities and the public the last 25 years that I have been ill, namely to the effect that any ailment that has no known medical cause, "therefore" has a known cause (?!?!), namely that it "must" be a psychiatric disorder, that does not entitle one to any benefits (which makes psychiatrists of this kind most popular with politicians) and does not entitle one to any medical research (which makes psychiatrists of this kind most popular with health insurances) and only entitles one to psychiatric treatments and drugs (which makes psychiatrists of this kind most popular with pharmaceutical companies, that anyway are their main allies and supporters).

Psychiatry is a dangerous health scam. [3]

As it happens, I did not know any of this before 2009, mostly because I had given up reading about M.E. after I had read the Ph.D. thesis of the Dutch clinical psychologist Bleyenberg, that seemed to me sick, sadistic, and completely unscientific, as indeed clinical psychology is, after which I decided I knew better things to read than this manner of intellectual and moral rot - after which I proceeded to read more logic, mathematics, history and philosophy.

But it turned out to be just the thing that was popular with politicians, health insurances, and journalists, and it became a dominant force in policy making, as also happened to the pseudoscientific pill pushers for pharmaceutical companies that have assembled in the American Psychiatric Association, that have produced the diagnostic manuals that pretend to be science but are pretexts to push billions worth of dangerous drugs into and onto a public of unsuspecting laymen.

In May of this year 2013 the Bible Of The Pushers aka DSM-5 will be published, very probably with an enormous PR-campaign, including mailings to all papers, to the effect that "now at last psychiatry is a respectable neuroscience". It will be PR-crafted lies from beginning to end, designed and pushed to give psychiatrists more power so as to allow them to push more pills without any proven curative value onto millions of people, so as to make billions of profits for pharmaceutical companies and their psychiatric shills.

It will probably effectively destroy millions of lives in order to make a few ten thousands of shrinks and pharmaceutical directors and representatives rich.

It will probably effect especially people with unexplained illnesses, such as M.E. and F.M., but also other diseases, and may also effect many with known medical diseases, because the sadistic shrinks' bible declares that any disease is or may be "co-morbid" with psychiatric disorder (just as priests once declared that one's failings were due to a pact with the devil: priests wouldn't lie, would they?), and only a psychiatrist can tell, and only a psychiatrists is capable of treating these "comorbidities", with all manner of expensive drugs they take percentages of, which probably will be a detail polite journalists will refuse to mention or investigate.

It will probably not effect me other than denying me any help, because I'll be 63 soon and because I am a psychologist and philosopher of science. Then again, if my personal situation grows worse, I will have no alternative except suicide, and that may be the same for many with my disease, aggrevated by their being younger, more naive, and subjected to more pressures to work, to be "normal", and not to believe or pretend one is ill if one feels ill: Psychiatrists have determined that one only can be ill if psychiatrists agree that one is ill, and that also in a manner approved by psychiatrists, and psychiatrists will argue, and will be rewarded for argueing, one is not ill if one's being ill will cost the state or the health insurances money.

In any case, the coming years will be extremely difficult for people with my kind of disease, and for people with other diseases that are not fully understood, which means: with most other diseases, for the psychiatric brotherhood of parasitical pushers will leech upon any and all disease, and declare it is a psychiatric disorder, if not wholly then at least partially, and proceed to maltreat and feed upon the ill, in the name of their fraudulent and sick pseudoscience.

2. The barbarian Dutch

I am Dutch, alas, and "therefore" a barbarian - though this is not quite what I meant, my readers may not be very amazed to find. In fact, there have been - for so small and provincial a country - quite a lot of amazing Dutch painters, Dutch mathematicians, Dutch physicists, Dutch musicians, and Dutch architects, though indeed most, if not all, are in the Dutch past and few in the Dutch present, where almost everything that is not mediocre is greeted by angry howls that it must be "elitarian" and "fascist", for thus are the Dutch mores since decades. ("Act normal, then you act mad enough!")

As to the present Dutch architecture, which is my subject:

It may be wise - in case you are a quite sensitive sort of person - to have some tranquillizers or pain killers at hand, and only then click on the following link to an article in the New York Times of December 28, 2012:
The article starts with a wholly deserved statement by Michael Kimmel
AMSTERDAM — Offhand I can’t recall seeing a more ridiculous looking building than the new Stedelijk Museum, which recently opened here. Shaped like a bathtub, of all things, it arrives years behind schedule at the tail end of the money-fueled, headline-hungry, erratically ingenious era of indulgent museum design that began to peter out with the global economy.
Being Dutch, I can supply a speculative answer to Mr Kimmel's question, also supported and illustrated by my fond song of joy about postmodern Dutch civilization:
The answer is probably that it was designed by true soccer hooligans who desired to puke into the face of whatever public visits the Stedelijk Museum [4], simply because they can, and have learned that all things are relative, no one is better than anyone, and real talent is too elitarian to admit anywhere in Holland outside soccer fields  or in a few mathematical niches in the universities, and that only on the understanding that these rare individuals do not pretend to be anything special.

I admit I may be mistaken, but there are few architectural things - among many postmodern atrocities - more fit to be blown up.
(Relatively to my own erudite esthetical metrics, of course.)

Notes

[1] Note that I do not say one should do this if one is not "the president of this land".

What I do say is that psychiatry is a pseudoscience that is purposively designed to push dangerous and medically worthless or unproven drugs into and unto naive and defenseless people in the name of medical science, and that this is to my way of thinking, that agrees with Hippocrates' primum non nocere = the prime duty of medical doctors is not to do harm, a crime that deserves criminal proceedings.

What I also say is that if this does not happen, the reason is that psychiatrists and their professional associations have succeeded in convincing the public that their pseudoscience is a real science, and that they succeeded to do so not by any rational scientific argument but by the propaganda of public relations: Loads of cleverly designed manipulative lies, deceptions, frauds, and misinformation.

[2]
Note I do not say all psychiatrists are sadists, and indeed I do not think so: I say that if one knows one is intelligent and one knows one is a sadist (and on psychiatric theories: also if one does not consciously know, but successfully repressed this, and rationalized one's sadism as "the desire to help"), the study of medicine and the specialism of psychiatry must be a most attractive option, for a sadist. Here are two examples that should also make this clear to laymen: D.E. Cameron (English) and J. Bastiaans (Dutch)

[3] And always was. See e.g. the late Richard Webster's site for a good exposition of the case against Freud. This does not mean that all psychiatrists are frauds; it does mean that psychiatry is a pseudoscience.

I do not myself believe that Freud was so unintelligent as not to know that he was a fraud, but it is conceivable that some well-known psychiatrists and quite a few of their pupils were - more than not: this is an intrinsically shady territory - bona fides. Even so, anyone who is fairly competent in philosophy of science cannot read almost all psychiatry without derision, or at least genuine amazement that nominally intelligent and well educated persons could believe such waffle, crap and bullshit. (As it happens, and as I have explained before, I was saved for life by having a high intelligence and reading a decent introduction to psychiatry when I was 17 and still could well remember my childhood.)

I am also aware that I use the term "fraud" in an unfortunately not widely received sense, in part because of "Freud" and "nomen est omen" but also because of these stipulations - and I am here less concerned with the practice of U.S. law as with logic, and quote from the article "fraud" in Wkipedia, minus the links to two notes:

In the United States, common law recognizes nine elements constituting fraud:

  1. a representation of an existing fact;
  2. its materiality;
  3. its falsity;
  4. the speaker's knowledge of its falsity;
  5. the speaker's intent that it shall be acted upon by the plaintiff;
  6. the plaintiff's ignorance of its falsity;
  7. the plaintiff's reliance on the truth of the representation;
  8. the plaintiff's right to rely upon it; and
  9. consequent damages suffered by the plaintiff.

As a matter of logical principle it is very easy to prove that the majority of psychiatric teachings, and many psycjiatric prescriptions of drugs, precisely because these claim to be based on medical science, and are meant to sell people drugs or services for money, also in view of the many different psychiatric schools, and the fundamental nearly total absence of any good really scientific evidence, cannot be other than a "fraud" in the above described sense.

[4] There is an apt German term: "Publiksbeschimpfung" - insulting the public.
