Fox News: "Petraeus for President!"
About ME/CFS

I will return to the corruption of the Dutch universities soon, and can meanwhile tell you the relevant files got downloaded a lot, and I will very probably reach the 1 million hits this year on my least visited site, which suggests that the total number of hits on both is between 2 and 5 million - hi professor Tillie, hi professor Van Kleef! - but right now I have another item, because I wrote about Mr Petraeus before:
There also were a few additions of links and brief remarks to yesterday's Nederlog.

I have straightened out the links today - 23.45 - in yesterday's NL.

Fox News: "Petraeus for President!"

Indeed, this is quite astounding - as if from a novel, articulating one's worst dreams, but plain fact in today's politically and militarily sick world:

The director and the owner of Fox News - the home of such deeply disturbed folks like Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck - namely Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch, turn out to have made an offer to Mr David Petraeus in 2011, when he was still a general, to run for president of the US with their backing and financing.

Here is first the place I found it, where you can hear the tape with the offer
and here is their source, journalist Bob Woodward, once again with a major scoop:
As said: it is quite amazing, and shows very much is very rotten in both Fox News and the US.

A bit oddly, there seems to be a considerable chance that Petraeus is the source of the tape - which, if so, I find commendable - because the person doing the offer, yet again an "embedded" sort of female journalist US generals seem to have such great fondness for, seems to be not very sharp and to be laboring with the belief she was alone with Petraeus in the room, as also is on tape (or indeed on whatever the record was recorded on - and my guess is a general in the US records his conversations with journalists).

Bob Woodward's text starts thus:
Roger Ailes, the longtime Republican media guru, founder of Fox News and its current chairman, had some advice last year for then-Gen. David H. Petraeus.

So in spring 2011, Ailes asked a Fox News analyst headed to Afghanistan to pass on his thoughts to Petraeus, who was then the commander of U.S. and coalition forces there. Petraeus, Ailes advised, should turn down an expected offer from President Obama to become CIA director and accept nothing less than the chairmanship of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the top military post. If Obama did not offer the Joint Chiefs post, Petraeus should resign from the military and run for president, Ailes suggested.

The Fox News chairman’s message was delivered to Petraeus by Kathleen T. McFarland, a Fox News national security analyst and former national security and Pentagon aide in three Republican administrations. She did so at the end of a 90-minute, unfiltered conversation with Petraeus that touched on the general’s future, his relationship with the media and his political aspirations — or lack thereof. The Washington Post has obtained a digital recording from the meeting, which took place in Petraeus’s office in Kabul.
So there you are.... and for the rest I refer you to The Washington Post: There's  more amazing stuff there, and it also comes in two pages.

P.S. Let me clarify Hazlitt's quotation that I started with, lest this is not misunderstood:
"Vice is man's nature: virtue is a habit - or a mask."
I have no doubt that Hazlitt meant by "habit": Whatever is acquired by education. And as to that
"If we believe in absurdities,
  we shall commit atrocities"

Messrs Ailes and Murdoch are two of the greatest purveyors of absurdities, bullshit, lies and misinformation the world has ever known, and it is nice to see one of their secretive dealings has been found out.

Also, I should not forget to mention that the reason these
purveyors of absurdities succeed so often is that postmodernistically the public education provided for the general public has been halved, in Holland through the dedicated work by such purveyors of absurdities as the Dutch Labour Party and the (now defunct) Dutch Communist Party, and notably by (for readers of Dutch) my generation of traitors - the eager and proud and most willing betrayers of the ideals of science, individual excellence, good education, honesty, truth, and morality: There are rotters to the right and to the left of the political spectrum.
