me+ME: Varia: Gerrit Komrij, Gwen Olsen, Sarah Myhill

English:
"I have been betrayed by the members of my own generation. I am part of a generation of traitors. Inevitably, I thereby an a traitor myself. I am infected with treason, I was present. But this changes nothing about the fact that I feel betrayed, especially by my friends."
-- Gerrit Komrij (2003)" (*)

This follows yesterday's varia in Nederlog, and is mostly about three persons named in the title and their work, with interesting news from dr Sarah Myhill about mitochondria

       1. Dutch poet Gerrit Komrij dies at 68
       2. More by Gwen Olsen on the corruption of psychiatry
       3. Sarah Myhill et al find confirmation for failing mitochondria in ME/CFS

1. Dutch poet Gerrit Komrij dies at 68

As my regular Dutch readers may know, I do not like Dutch 'civilization', as I also explained in English in
and I also do not like Dutch literature, with one major exception: Eduard Douwes Dekker, who lived from 1820-1887 and called himself Multatuli, because he was a very brave, very intelligent man, who wrote in an amazingly beautiful Dutch about very many subjects, with most of his published work, mostly with my comments, on my site:
There are some partial exceptions, like Marten Toonder, Jan Blokker and Drs. P., who excelled in certain genres they mostly created themselves, as did De Schoolmeester, Piet Paaltjens. (Links are to Wikipedia, English were available.)

Outside special genres, for me especially W.F. Hermans, who died in 1995, and
who died yesterday, stand out as sensible men.

Then again, I like Hermans and Komrij mostly for their essays, which I like because I tend to agree more than not, and not because they were great essayists, for while they wrote well, but are not - by a long chalk - in the class of Montaigne, Dr. Johnson, William Hazlitt or Multatuli. (**)

But Komrij had a good mind and wrote well, and also was one of the very few Dutchmen who saw the decline of the universities and indeed of Dutch civilizations in terms which are reminiscent of my terms, and indeed those of
W.F. Hermans.

If you read Dutch, you may be interested in these five links from Nederlog 2006, all nominally related to the elections there were then in Holland, but in fact mostly about the declines of education and civilization in Holland:
All of the above still holds - except that we're six years further in misery and decline. And since Komrij spoke of 'the treason of my generation', here is a link to a Dutch piece from 2008, in the Dutch series Lob der Partei, that gives my own diagnosis of that treason, namely to the effect that most were quite corrupt, insincere, posturing, conformist or following fashions right from the beginning - as Komrij also seems to have finally arrived at, in the above commemorative video:
For my Dutch readers, here are the links to a video-registration of Komrij talking about the traitors of his and my generation:

    Het verraad van mijn generatie:
I haven't yet seen or heard most of this: So far I only read the text of the speech. I do know that I have been saying and writing similar things ever since I returned to Holland in 1977, and found my generation in power in the University of Amsterdam.

And I may return to this - yea, possibly even in Dutch, maybe only to document what I think about this, and the destruction of most of what was civilized in Holland by my generation of phony careerist liars and moral and intellectual degenerates (for surely it is degenerate, in a Stalinistic way, to further your own personal career towards an academic job in a pseudoscience, in the name of Marx, freedom, socialism, emancipation, and other false, deceptive and lied about moral ideals). 2. More by Gwen Olsen on the corruption of psychiatry

Yesterday I mentioned Ms Gwen Olsen, who is a whistleblower on the corrupt practices of many psychiatrists and the pharmacological industry, who must feel at least somewhat vindicated by the Glaxo-Kline scandal I reported yesterday.

Here is another video from her site, in which she states her own motives, and gives a very clear statement of what she saw happening during her 15 years as a saleswoman of especially psychotropic drugs to psychiatrists and doctor:

Here is a quote from the above video, that starts at 3.44:

A large number of psychiatrists are dishonest. Because I see them giving people drugs that they know are brain damaging therapeutics; that they know do not have positive long term outcomes ; that they know will not cure anything. They just take a list of symptoms and then they call it 'a mental illness' or 'a mental disorder', and these are voted upon, by psychiatrists. We can define people as mentally ill, and therefore we can sell more drugs for the pharmaceutical industry. This is an extremely lucrative alliance because there is no scientific data that is required for a psychiatrist to diagnose a mental illness. There is no blood test; there is no urine test; there is no PET scan. There is no medical evidence required. And so therefore that broadens the potential patient population considerably.

Quite so: It is conmanship, of a very despicable, very cruel, very dishonest kind. And it is very good Ms Olsen found the courage and the words to say so: A brave woman trying to do the good thing and speaking the truth about the many corruptions she was swindled into as a pharmaceutical sales rep.

3. Sarah Myhill et al find confirmation for failing mitochondria in ME/CFS

Finally, a bit of good news from dr. Sarah Myhill, that I take the liberty of copying from ProHealth, that is a company selling supplements, that was created by someone with ME/CFS, and has a lot of useful information about ME/CFS, were it only because I arrived at a theory much like dr Myhill's in 1987, as outlined in my ME-Resources:

Article:
Mitochondrial dysfunction and the pathophysiology of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS)
– Source: International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, June 30, 2012

By Norman E Booth, Sarah Myhill, John McLaren-Howard

[Note: The full text of this article is available free at http://www.ijcem.com/files/IJCEM1204005.pdf. To read the authors' press release summarizing their crucial findings, click here. The concluding paragraph of their clearly written paper reads:
“Implications for the treatment of ME/CFS. Here we have emphasized the use of biomedical tests to aid in the diagnosis and to vastly improve our knowledge of the pathophysiology involved in this illness. In addition, these biomedical tests can act as a valuable guide for medical and therapeutic interventions. These will be discussed in a paper which is in preparation.” They also note that "no mildly ill patients were tested" and the findings may not be specific just to ME/CFS because certain other illnesses/syndromes are associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.]
Abstract:
The objectives of this study are to:

• Test the hypothesis that the fatigue and accompanying symptoms of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are in part due to defects in energy provision at the cellular level,

• And to understand the pathophysiology of the defects so that effective medical intervention can be implemented.

We performed an audit of 138 patients (ages 18-65) diagnosed with ME/CFS and attending a private practice.

The patients and 53 normal, healthy controls had the ATP Profile test carried out on neutrophils from a 3-ml venous blood sample. [Ed note: Neutrophils are the most common kind of white blood cell.]

This test yields 6 numerical factors that describe the availability of ATP and the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. [Oxidative phosphorylation is the metabolic pathway that uses energy released by oxidation of nutrients to produce energy-supplying ATP.]

Other biomedical measurements, including the concentration of cell-free DNA in plasma, were made.

The results of the audit are compared with the controls and a previous cohort of 61 patients.

We find that:

• All patients tested have measureable mitochondrial dysfunction which correlates with the severity of the illness.

• The patients divide into two main groups differentiated by how cellular metabolism attempts to compensate for the dysfunction.

• Comparisons with exercise studies suggest that the dysfunction in neutrophils also occurs in other cells. This is confirmed by the cell-free DNA measurements which indicate levels of tissue damage up to 3.5 times the normal reference range.

• The major immediate causes of the dysfunction are lack of essential substrates and partial blocking of the translocator protein sites in mitochondria.

• The ATP Profile is a valuable diagnostic tool for the clinical management of ME/CFS.

Of course, the fact that I arrived at a similar theory 25 years ago doesn't prove anything about its correctness or indeed its rationality (I did not study medicine nor biochemistry, for one thing), but I find it personally a bit pleasing, as I find it quite pleasing that dr Myhill now has strong evidence that her theory makes sense (and both her theory and her evidence clearly are a lot better than what I arrived at speculatively, long ago, from results of more than a year of statistics on supplements and their effects, and from diving into biochemistry, which is a beautiful subject, but not one I hold degrees in).

Anyway... this really seems good news to me, and I have downloaded the above linked materials, and probably will return to the subject in Nederlog.

(*) Komrij is not speaking for me here, but he is quite fair about (almost) everyone else in Holland who was born between 1945 and 1955, who attended a Dutch university, and also quite fair about those born later who have attended a Dutch university: They were - almost - all careerists who pretended to be leftist revolutionaries. I am the only real exception that I know of, and in my exoneration it should, therefore, be added that (1) my parents and grandparents were real marxist revolutionaries and members of the Dutch Resistance against Nazism - so I can judge who is a marxist or revolutioary and who pretends to be one, and (2) I have, next to the handicap of being ill since I was 28, also the handicap of being uncommonly intelligent, which in Holland is a severe handicap, at least if you combine it with a predilection for speaking the truth: Then you'll never get a job in any way commensurate with your intelligence, because the Dutch don't trust you: Who knows, you might start speaking the truth about them!

(**) The Dutch - for the most part, and there are exceptions, indeed mentioned in this text - are not only intentionally uncivilized (they intentionally broke down their schools and universities to make all of them accessible to virtually any moron, all in the name of 'equality', because the great majority of stupid people, if Dutch, feel entitled to an M.A. and feel that denying it to them on the grounds of their lack of talent is 'fascism'), they also are, unintentionally, very provincial: Only a very small percentage of the Dutch read any literature that is not in Dutch, and indeed only a small percentage of the Dutch read for pleasure. In fact, at age 62 I have not met any Dutchman
who read Montaigne, Dr. Johnson, William Hazlitt and Multatuli, and many Dutchmen will feel proud to tell you that they haven't read any of these dead white males, and that they can't see the point of doing so, at all. My own answer to that is here

The Harvard Classics - What's it good for?

but then I am so elitarian that I was removed from the University of Amsterdam for thinking for myself.

(***) The reason that I knew, my self, that the pseudo-revolutionaries I met in the University of Amsterdam were liars, phoneys, con men and con women, is mostly that I knew Marx and that my parents were genuine Marxists, and therefore I could see that all those pseudo-revolutionaries I met did not know Marx, although they claimed to do so, and were obvious impostors as "revolutionaries" (as indeed my father also said, who called them "petit bourgeois gone wild" - "wildgeworden kleinburgers", in Dutch, originally a Leninist expression).
