me+ME:  The  Whittemores in trouble

I change subject, although I touched on the Whittemores and the Whittemore Peterson Institute yesterday.  Hardly had I uploaded that...

- by the way, and just to help you to some exquisite stuff in case you missed it in yesterday's disquisition about crisis, talent, Zappa, propaganda, and public relations:

      Zappa plays Zappa
Son Of Orange County-More Trouble Every Day

is really fine music and a fine video too, all 30 minutes of it -

... or I was informed that the Whittemores' pater familias is in deep trouble.

The rest of this brief Nederlog is about Harvey Whittemore's problems, and is only here in the context of ME/CFS, so if you are not interested, you need not read on, though you like to have links to more Zappa-material, below, also with instructive lyrics.

To start with today's subject, the Whittemore's trouble, I  should say that since I lost the last file I wrote about the Whittemore's troubles, I have to make do with some others on this site to provide some background - but then  the last two of the following files do have the merit of containing some relevant background about PR aka the art of lying, deceiving and propaganda and the first gives some details about their court case against a former partner, who went to court against them:

Now to get to the latest Whittemore news.

I have mentioned Ms Martha Bellisle and the Reno Gazette Journal for which she writes before, and she still is reporting on the Whittemore court case in that journal, and she has at least one more article dated June 6, 2012 titled:

Former Nevada lobbyist Harvey Whittemore charged
with violating federal campaign finance laws; lying
to FBI
  This starts thus:

Former lobbyist and political fundraiser Harvey Whittemore wasindicted Wednesday for allegedly making illegal campaign contributionsto U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and lying to federalofficials, including the Federal Election Commission and the FBI.

If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each of the four counts. U.S. Magistrate William Cobb signed an arrest warrant Wednesday commanding 'any authorized law enforcement officer' to arrest Whittemore 'without unnecessary delay.'

One of his lawyers, John Arrascada, said he could not comment on why federal prosecutors sought an arrest warrant instead of a summons, which is often used in white-collar cases involving defendants with no criminal history. But he said late Wednesday that Whittemore would surrender today to officials to be arraigned. A trial date will then be set.

Whittemore, 55, was charged by the grand jury with one count of making excessive contributions, one count of making contributions in the name of another and two counts of making false statements to a federal agency, according to the indictment.

'Mr. Whittemore allegedly used his family members and employees as conduits to make illegal contributions to the campaign committee of an elected member of Congress,' Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer said. 'Furthermore, according to today's indictment, he attempted to conceal his crimes by lying to the FBI.'

This seems like major trouble to me. There is a lot more, and Ms Bellisle's article takes 4 - though not very large - pages in the RGJ.

Here is some about the man Harvey is, or at least was:

For decades, Whittemore was considered one of Nevada's key political fundraisers, thanks to his effective lobbying skills and powerful clients. Sporting his signature goatee, an easy smile and an endless supply of energy, Whittemore sweet-talked his way through the Nevada Legislature representing old-guard casino owners, tobacco companies and other top-dollar clients. Over the years, he built a reputation as one of the most influential and successful players in Nevada politics, land development and business. The indictment also could affect Whittemore, who also was a longtime lawyer with the powerhouse firm of Lionel, Sawyer & Collins, in other ways. The Nevada Bar Association said the indictment could cause him to lose his license to practice law in Nevada.

In fact, I was sent rather several other article, that I will not quote, except for this bit from the RGJ entitled

After not guilty plea, Harvey Whittemore released from custody
       and walks out of courthouse

that also documents some of the rather quaint legal habits in Nevada - at least, when seen from a European perspective, and also without  suggesting European law is better practised or has better laws - and mentions the present status of Harvey Whittemore (*):

Whittemore, 59, was arraigned before U.S. District Court Magistrate William Cobb, wearing a black suit and blue tie and with chains around his ankles He was in federal custody at the U.S. Marshal's Office and was brought in to court. His wife, Annette, sat in the courtroom audience. There were many members of the news media as well. Whittemore stood before the magistrate and never turned around. Cobb said he has known Whittemore for 40 years. Both the prosecution and defense said they did not want to recus
him. Cobb agreed to let Whittemore out on his own recognizance.

The brief of it, from my perspective (**) is that it seems to me that the Whittemores, and specifically Harvey, their pater familias, are in major trouble with the federal law and with the Seenos, as reported below, and that I have given up on an institute that uses public relations the way they do:

Their appearances on 'Nevada Newsmakers' was in fact appearance on the VNR of their very own Public Relations firm, whose chief currently also is in the leadership of the WPI: It was stage play, pretense, mockery: designed to deceive.

I quote Wikipedia on the subject:

A video news release (VNR) is a video segment made to look like a news report, but is instead created by a PR firm, advertising agency, marketing firm, corporation, or government agency. They are provided to television newsrooms to shape public opinion, promote commercial products and services, publicize individuals, or support other interests. (..)

Critics of VNRs have called the practice deceptive or a propaganda technique, particularly when the segment is not identified to the viewers as a VNR.

I feel defiled, but then that's just me. Also speaking for myself: The only thing I owe people who do such thing is contempt.

And while I agree that  there is a lot of public relations these days: corporations do it;
federal, state and city goverments do it; the Americam Psychiatric Association does it; and medical charities do it, this widespread practice of lying, like the widespread practice of racism, has no defense at all: If your business depends on  lies and deceptions, your business should not exist,  as it is a danger to the public.

Here are the Zappas on it, in three different versions of one instructive song, with ore great music and text:

I am the slime (Zappa plays Zappa, 2008, mostly musoc_

or also here with subtitles (The Industry Part 78) and a lot of other spoken text

Frank Zappa speaks his mind ('Just the opinion of an aging buffoon') (***)
Finally, for your instruction and for singing along here are the lyrics on the subject of PR

I am the slime

I am gross and perverted

I am obsessed and deranged
I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I am the tool of the government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you
I may be vile and perniceous
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicous
With the stuff that i say
I'm the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I'm the slime oozing out
From your T.V. set
You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we dont need you
Don't go for help noone will heed you
You're mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

Thats right folks dont touch that dial
Well I am the slime from your video
Oozing along on your living room floor
I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime
People look at me go
I am the slime from your video
Oozing along on your living room floor
I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime
People look at me go

(*) The quote that follows put Mr Whittemore's age at 59; the one before that at 55, which I suppose to be a typo. See the last Wikipedia link.

(**) As indicated earlier: My reason to mention this case and to quote
the above is that I've written repeatedly about the Whittemores and their WPI in Nederlog, in the context of ME/CFS. Otherwise I am neither interested nor concerned.

(***) The quote - 'Just the opinion of an aging buffoon'
- is spoken by Zappa himself, in one of the interviews with him in the video I linked, that contains a selection of parts from interviews with Zappa where he speaks about the media.

Incidentally: Some of this - e.g. about Aids - may seem mistaken or exaggerated, at present, but then the reader should realize that (1) the practice of public relations - lies, deception and propaganda spread by the media and presented as if it were journalism or information - is very widespread and as dangerous at is widespread (at least: to a free society, or what remains of it) and (2) the US government has a very frightening record of medical experiments: See the Wikipedia article
Unethical human experimentation in the United States  or specifically the Tuskegee syphilis experiment.

Corrections, if any are necessary, have to be made later.
