me+ME: B12-protocols + US amendments + state terrorism

Yesterday there was a bit of Leibniz plus my comments, incidentally chosen haphazardly, except for the considerations that it should not be about a topic only academic philosophers write about and that it should give a fair representation of what the rest of my Leibniz-section is like.

If you liked it, or found it interesting, now you know there is much more (and it discusses all manner of questions); if not, there is more on the site that's not about philosophy, though it is mostly a philosophical site, in the logical and realist tradition, which is to say that much - not: all - of philosophy for me is philosophy of science, for which see e.g.

- On natural philosophy, philosophy of science, and psychiatry
-
Scientific Realism versus Postmodernism

Anyway, some updates on things related to ME, plus a link relating to Crisis: Sixth Amendment in coma of a week ago:

     1. B12 protocol
     2. Fixed backgrounds
     3. Quiet in ME-land
     4. The US amendments falling like leaves in autumn
     5. A note on terrorism

1. B12 protocol

I wrote about my B12 protocol several times. Here is one the most complete statements as regards to what I take and what it costs (and note that both are personal and situation-dependent in several ways):

- me+ME: My present B12 protocol

The brief summary of where I am now is this

  • It did and does help some but after some three months, in
September, I got problems in two ways: First, the improvements
flattened out, and second, I slept less and less, which I just
cannot afford, so I stopped the original protocol and started
experimenting (taking less, taking more potassium)
  • This is similar to the experiences of quite a few others that I read
about, though not all: It does effect people with ME positively; the
progress flattens in quite a few cases after a few months; various
    people get various difficulties.
  • I am still experimenting, but no longer using the protocol in the
above link on a daily basis, since I do not get enough sleep then.
Taking it on alternate days turned out to improve sleep, and adding
    potassium also helped some.

My overall problem is too little relevant knowledge; no good data about my own condition; and being dependent on just the feedback of my own body, which means guessing mostly, though it is rather probable that the original protocol did lead for me to problems with sleeping, and also rather probable that I did not use enough potassium.

So... I am still experimenting, and what I am using now is mostly like the protocol in the above link, but - more or less - on alternate days. I still believe this helps some with energy, but as before it doesn't help with pain. Then again, I sleep more this way, which is absolutely needed for me.

My basic problem concerning the B12 protocol is not enough relevant knowledge, and the internet is not much help, since most who write about using B12 do not seem to know much about science; are not at all precise in reporting (what they take; what their ailment, age, condition are; how long they are ill, and lots more: All usually in the dark, in a mixture of assurances and dogmas and beliefs and hopes) and are remarkably scarce in supplying scientific references. Also, having little money, what I take is expensive for me, so it has to be effective to be continued.

For the moment I am still glad that I do know of something I can buy that does provide some more energy, more often than not, but basically I am mostly in the dark about the reasons, and don't really know whether what I do effects a side-effect or something important. (Note: I wrote "know"; and not: "could make myself believe".)

I'll keep experimenting the following month or two, I assume. If I find out anything that is useful, I will write about it here, but it's best to keep in mind this is personal and experimental anyway.

2. Fixed backgrounds

I also keep record of this in Things still to be done on my sites but here is a list of the most recent fixings (of the blue background, in Mozilla browsers, that I prefer):

All backgrounds in my Lao Tzu section, Aristotle section, Boetie section, Burckhardt section, Chamfort section and Descartes section have been fixed, and so have those in IndexME2008 (that had been wrongly fixed before).

I know this is not the most interesting of communications, but then again it's a considerable amount of work, and the eye candy department is also important.

3. Quiet in ME-land

For the moment it is comparatively quiet in ME-land on patients' forums, so far as I can and did see.

And indeed, there also have been a number of considerable shocks to many patients with ME/CFS the last two months and a half:

A. The XMRV-connection doesn't hold water scientifically.
B. Dr. Mikovits has been fired from the WPI because of insubordination.
C. Dr. Mikovits has been arrested after having had the lab-books and
other things that clearly belonged to the WPI stolen by an assistant.
D. There is prima facie evidence that dr. Mikovits and/or co-workers in
the Science-paper of October 2009 falsified data.

It is therefore not amazing if many patients - none of whom believed the last two years that the XMRV-story would unpack like this - feel rather dazed and confused, and feel more like not writing about this, or like writing about other things.

It is also not amazing if many patients - nearly all of whom did not have any relevant education of any kind (a real science, retrovirology, bio-chemistry, psychological or medical degrees) - do not quite know what to make of it all.

Then again, while I can understand all of that, I again see a whole "patient community" discuss things like the tarot rather than the DSM-5, while I fear that this may well be going to turn out to be a major killer of people with ME/CFS in a year's time, if there is no credible bio-medical cause by then.

For those who do care for their own health rather than waste time with bullshitting about baloney:

       - DSM-5 and ICD-11 Watch

It's quite frightening: Totally corrupt pseudoscientists making a totally corrupt and dishonest bid for personal power and money for their manner of shamans and witch-doctors in the name of "evidence-based" science, but it does fit well with the strong totalitarian tendencies these days in politics; it may well be abused as polital psychiatry real soon now; and it will effect most people with ME/CFS in the West if there is not found a biomedical causal explanation soon.

4.  The US amendments falling like leaves in autumn

Continuing my
Crisis: Sixth Amendment in coma  I have here and now only two items from The Young Turks, from yesterday and from today:

      -
National Defense Authorization Act Provision Update
       -
Obama Insisted on Indefinite Detentions of Citizens

It has not been signed into law yet, but this does not bode well at all: The proposed steps are steps towards a police state, where anybody can be arrested and made to disappear forever by the executive power, and it seems president Obama is the guy who wants to further these destructions of the amendments to the Constitution, that so far have stood and stand in the way of the executive powers becoming dictatorial.

5. A note on terrorism

Having seen the last item, and having been busy on my site, I noticed that there is a note [1] to Mill's Chapter II of his On Liberty that I wrote 2006, using a Dutch text I wrote in 2005. Here it is, without any change. The blue text is John Stuart Mill's; the black mine:

[1] "THE time, it is to be hoped, is gone by when any defence would be necessary of the "liberty of the press" as one of the securities against corrupt or tyrannical government. No argument, we may suppose, can now be needed, against permitting a legislature or an executive, not identified in interest with the people, to prescribe opinions to them, and determine what doctrines or what arguments they shall be allowed to hear. "

As I write this, in the summer of 2006, it is almost 150 years ago that Mill's "On Liberty" was first published, and "THE time" Mill wrote so hopefully about still has not arrived.

Indeed, at present the governments of Europe and the United States, so far  more democracies and states of law than not, are rapidly changing - with parliamentary, judiciary and journalistic support, mostly - into states with dictatorial and authoritarian governments, where all manner of liberties are curtailed, and all manner of duties imposed on any and all civilians, supposedly "because of the dangers of Terrorism".

This is a lie, and must be a conscious lie, from the vast majority of those ministers in most states where it is propounded, even allowing for a considerable degree of incompetence and panic, for the simple and evident reasons that between 1950 and 1990 the dangers of real terrorism, what with enormous despotic states with enormous well-trained armies with atomic weapons, were far greater and more dangerous than at present, where "the enemy" consists of an obscure entity composed of a few hundreds, thousands or at most tenthousands of Mohammedan fanatics, without armies, without states, without atomic weapons, usually with little or no military training, and with only a very small part of the capacity to harm that was possessed by the Soviet Union and its satellites.

Since this is so very obvious to anyone who seriously thinks about "terrorism", as it has admittedly raised its ugly face since September 11, 2002, that one must assume that the present vast curtailments of and restrictions on many of the human and civil freedoms that have been in power for at least eighty years, including the years of the Cold War, and the Soviet threat of war and terrorism on a world scale in a few minutes, as the armies of the enemy of the West in the time of the Cold War stood at the West's  borders, armed to the teeth, I assume this undoing of many of the human and civil freedoms my parents and grandparent enjoyed unrestrictedly, happens on purpose, and happens to strengthen the interests of those who are currently in power.

Indeed, I think the situation as regards human rights so serious - with one's email read and one's phone tapped, all as a matter of course because one might be "a terrorist", and one's precise whereabouts on earth checkable by cell-phone if one carries one, and one's being forced to carry identity-papers wherever one goes, to identify oneself against unidentifiable cops or security-guards from private organizations, and while almost no civilian in Europe has the right to carry arms, even while the best obvious defense against any "terrorism" is to properly arm the population that also was allowed to vote, to drive cars, and to buy axes and chainsaws, wherewith much harm can be done, but which do not protect one effectively from armed terrorists - that I must assume that this happens either on purpose and with great and grave criminal intent or else not on purpose and because of great and liable incompetence.

With a world leader of the evident gifts of mind and heart of George Bush Jr. this is difficult to decide, but I have no difficulties to decide the issue when it is applied to some of his advisors, although I neither know the reasons why, nor the gains made or in view, even though it is also clear to me that there are many billions worth of oil in Iraqi soil.

But it is not impossible, with the sort of government and governing persons now in power in the U.S., that in fact, according to them, something like a Holy War or crusade is in progress, of the Christians against the Muslims, in which, of course, they feel they have God on their side, and perhaps in some cases His direct voice in their head, and also anything whatsoever is permitted, so they may feel, because the stakes are so high, and they are doing God's work.

In short, I live - and write this - in what the Chinese called "interesting times", where many human rights and freedoms are being destroyed on purpose, in modern Western nominally democratic states of law, supposedly "to fight terrorism", but certainly with the effect of making the small minority of politicians, bureaucrats and "safety guards", that effectively form the government, very much more powerful in the West than western governments have been since Hitler fell from power, and with the possibly unintended effect of making the state, the nation and the population ready for the worst dictatorship ever, with total state control over a person's means of communication, whereabouts and identity, and already such that any person who is merely accused of "terrorism" or of being an "illegal alien" has lost the right of habeas corpus, and may be delivered at the pleasure of the minister to the secret service of the state he originally came from.   Back.

Incidentally, the Dutch text from 2005 is here:

- Over terrorisme

It is fairly long, but quite clear, and as I wrote already at the time, at the end, no one else said similar things at the time that I know of. And thus it is still, for the most part.
