ME + me : Bloody stupid hysteria + lying

"One does as one can, not as one wants."
    -- French saying

I keep being unwell so yesterday there was no Nederlog.

This Nederlog mostly continues ME + me :  Animal Forum - 3: Slaughterhouse 11 and ME + me : The ME-Association takes an ethical position and contains some basic rational arguments about infecting and storming blood banks and LP.

1. Bloody stupid hysteria
2. More on the Lying ProcessTM

1. Bloody stupid hysteria

I wrote about the bloody stupidity of beleaguering blood banks precisely a month ago, ME + me : On infecting and storming blood banks, but it goes on, namely on both forums for patients with ME - that I know something about: there are more - that I call PR-F and ME-F.

It's not all nonsense: PollyCbr wrote a blog on PR-F that makes moral sense, but there also is now a troll that calls itself aruschima that tries to evoke stupid actions against bloodbanks, in prose that's stupid, hysteric and nonsense, on both forums.

It is utter crap, intellectually, morally, stylistically, and logically, and is uttered forth in various forms on both forums, all as described, though I should and do mention that the link I produced is to PR-F and there moderator Martlet has stepped in, and done rightly. (I say it as I see it, and am fairminded.)

One of the crapulous entries ends thus:

"Anyone who allows the spread of XMRV, knowing it destroys life's like ME/CFS does, stands by and shies away from real action which could stop the crime, is an accomplice to the crime !"

Well... it's a fallacy, but I am willing to believe aruschima is an accomplice to the rape of catholic choir boys and allows its spread knowingly, knowing being raped as a ten year old by a catholic Father destroys lifes. And that miss aruschima also is accomplice to any of the other of all the many crimes she knows of and as yet has done nothing about.

Apart from that, let's consider some rational arguments:

At this point in time, XMRV is not known to cause ME/CFS.

Logically speaking, what is the case amounts to this:

Some research has produced strong evidence that for various diseases D, patients with that disease have a far higher incidence of XMRV than persons who do not have that disease D. There also some purported research that has not found such evidence, but that research can be dismissed as flimsy at best, and methodologically faulty (*).

So on present knowledge about XMRV and ME (FM, Lyme, Autism...) there is evidence for a correlation between these diseases and XMRV, that is well supported by good research reported in good journals, although it is not supported by inferior research in inferior journals.

That's about where it stands at the moment, realistically and without wishful thinking - and in fact that position and that correlation bodes well for funding for biomedical research - real science and not the pseudoscience by psychiatrists with a personal and/or political interest - relevant to ME and related diseases, and better than so far in the 32 years that I have this disease.

However, realistically and without wishful thinking: Anybody who knows science knows the slogan (evidence of) "correlation is not" (evidence of) "causation", and it is also common knowledge - among such scientifically enlightened folks - that evidence of a correlation does not come itself with any direction (as in: "this was co-produced by this rather than that").

To find out how things really are more real bio-medical research is necessary. Since XMRV may be correlated to far more diseases than ME and similar diseases, and since it is correlated to prostate cancer, there is independent and strong reason for governments to be concerned:

It seems important to try to keep a human retrovirus out of the blood gathered by bloodbanks for transfusions (such as anybody may need, after an accident or operation), and especially if it is correlated with and possibly causes dangerous diseases.

Therefore, XMRV must be researched bio-medically for all kinds of good reasons, ME being one of many, but sofar there is positive proof of little that I know of than (i) XMRV exists and (ii) there are high correlations of presence of XMRV in patients with some kinds of serious diseases.

Because of the importance of safe blood in blood transfusions, it is likely that governments will fund and/or further the necessary bio-medical research into XMRV and its dangers.

This is interesting and hopeful news for patients with the diseases possibly implicated, especially in cases like ME, FM and autism that so far have no accepted bio-medical causal explanation, though it has been accepted since 1969 by the World Health Organization that ME is a neurological disease, and since 1993 explicitly that it is not a psychiatric condition - in spite of which psychiatrically schooled pseudoscientists have maintained it is, and found funding and governmental support for that position in especially the US, Great Britain and The Netherlands.

All there is about XMRV and ME that is certain, rationally speaking, are good reasons to favour bio-medical research into XMRV; good reasons to hold that the probability of real bio-medical research into the causes of ME and related diseases is considerably enhanced; and good reasons to look forward to the Alter paper (the publication of which was said to be happening, in the course of the next weeks, with the remark September might be better than August in view of summer, somewhere on PR-F yesterday).

So miss aruschima seems to me to be bloody irrational, possibly in need of some mild tranquillizers, possibly a troll, and definitely totally mistaken and in fact working in the interests of CDC, KCL, Radboud etc. psychiatric pros of pseudoscientific teachings, for these (i) would love to see patients with ME/CFS arrested for disturbing the peace, breaking the law, or making palpable fools of themselves by saying things anyone in his or her right mind knows not to be so or to be over the top hysterical emo-talk, while (ii) these pseudoscientific trickcycklists have much reason to fear the funding of real bio-medical research into the causes of ME and to try now, before such funding has been approved, to do all they can to prevent it will happen, so as to save their own positions and reputations.

It's as simple as that, but there are folks who either cannot or will not understand the simplest things.

2. More on the Lying ProcessTM

Talking of anyone in his or her right mind ... the day before last, in ME + me : The ME-Association takes an ethical position I praised the ME Association and Ms. Chapman for doing, writing and saying something sensible about planned "scientific research" on the question whether the treatment regime of the Lightning ProcessTM (as it's peddlers write) is dangerous for ill children on ... ill children, without ever having tested that treatment ever before, while anybody with any real medical or psychological academic competence can and should know that it is wishful thinking sold as treatment for money:

Wishful thinking: The inference of conclusions that conform to one's desires because they conform to one's desires: "It is so, because I desire it to be so; it is not so, because I desire it not to be so."

Inference Scheme of Wishful Thinking: I desire it were true, therefore it is true.

This is the fundamental principle of invalid reasoning, and it should be clear why this is so and why no human being spends a day or an hour without some wishful thinking: Because wishful thinking yields what human beings wish, and gives them satisfaction and pleasure, even if this is merely fantasy, and because human beings desire so much to get what they please that merely imagining that things are as they desire to believe they are is a sufficiently strong motive to make them believe what they desire, and to act on that belief.

In other words, it is delusion and self-deception, sold for lots of money, including the condition that one should lie forever after or get ill again (**)

In terms of evidence and clarity, the best evidence, as often, is on Ms. Chapman's site, and specifically here: ME Agenda and LP.  I have written about this before, namely here

but then I do satire while Ms. Chapman is trying to move members of parliament and the boards of ME charities and to provide checked facts, documents and information for advocates, intelligent members of the public, journalists, and whoever is seriously interested in ME and willing and able to think rationally.

She does that very well indeed, I think, if indeed not for people unable or unwilling to think, and unfortunately much of the material she gathers and presents is not easy. But it is very important to have, also because she does go for the truth and the facts of the matter, not for fiery prose.

Here then is a bit of the things she gathered, to illustrate why I wrote

It seems to me both quite dangerous and unethical to try to find out ("research") whether this crap indeed is crap by submitting children to this totally untested intellectually and scientifically detestable nonsense.

Here is a selection of text by somebody with ME who took this Lightning ProcessTM with the description what it amounts to, for ₤ 666 - 999 a three-day throw, and tea + biscuits generously included, I understood, presumably also for children, with my links provided (and check that ‘affirmation’: it'll help you the rest of your life!) and a grammatical correction supplied:

There were 3 other m.e. patients at the same course none of these people nor myself recovered. The course was over 3 days from 10am-2pm with a break at lunchtime for tea and biscuits. We were told not to discuss the content of the course with each other during the breaks. We learned the ‘affirmation’ and stood on the floor on paper circles with key words written on them.

Here is the big secret of what we had to say while standing on paper circles -

WHEN YOU FEEL A SYMPTOM
SHOUT- STOP! (stand on the paper STOP)
SAY- I HAVE A CHOICE ( stand on the paper CHOICE)
SAY- YOU CAN CHOOSE THE PIT OR THE LIFE YOU LOVE ( you then stand on the LIFE YOU LOVE circle)
SAY- I CHOOSE THE LIFE I LOVE
SAY- WELL DONE, YOU ARE A FANTASTIC GENIUS, YOU ARE ON TRACK! I AM WITH YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY (you are being your own coach here)
ASK YOURSELF – WHAT DO I WANT?
ANSWER YOURSELF- I WANT ENERGY AND HAPPINESS LIKE (you say something that means energy etc. to you)
ASK YOURSELF- HOW WILL I GET THIS?
TELL YOURSELF- BY STOPPING EVERY NEGATIVE THOUGHT
EVERY NEGATIVE EMOTION
AND DOING THE LIGHTNING PROCESS.

There are a few more short affirmations and that’s it you are cured of M.E. We all DID leave on the third day full of hope and newly found confidence and told that no-matter how we felt in the future ALWAYS SAY WERE WERE CURED OR THE PROCESS WILL NOT WORK !!!! These coaches are very good at their job but I can assure you they can not cure you of M.E. Think about it PAPER CIRCLES AND AFFIRMATIONS. The four of us all were ‘high’ for a few weeks or months and did indeed do more than usual but sadly all relapsed.”

See ME Agenda and LP for the full text and context.

And note the consequence: In this extra-ordinarily silly and despicable manner children, who may be seriously ill are to be exhorted by "specialists", who are adults, to start lying about their own pains and feelings of ill health, and implicitly accused of causing their own pains and feelings of ill health by thinking they have them!

Lightning ProcessTM ??
Lying ProcessTM ?!

Go get Brain TappedTM !!!
It's free and open source!!!!

P.S. As I said: See ME Agenda and LP for the full text and context. I hope the better brained or kinder hearted medical and psychologically qualified understand a little better why I exhorted them thus:

1. I do think medical and professional organizations ought to move into these and other health scams: Either the studies of medicine and psychology qualify one scientifically and hopefully ethically, and then you know these sciences are both intellectually and ethically totally inconsistent with the WHEEWHEE and LP scams, and medical and psychological professional organizations should DO something to stop pseudos from ruining patients health while removing income from professional medical doctors and psychologists, or else the studies of medicine and psychology do NOT qualify one scientifically, let alone ethically, and all these academically disqualified persons should preach the forces of WHEEWHEE or turn to Eastern Religion or fundamentalist Christianity (also full of healers who are dealers in promises trading on people's foolishness).

2. Personally, I find it all pretty sickening, and only fit for satire, for one placed like me. This is not something I can discuss reasonably in socalled rational and reasonable tones on a site like mine, for a similar sort of reason as there is no rational and reasonable argument possible on the main facts of the holocaust or the roundness of the earth: A sane person isn't going to sit around the table with flatearthers to convince them that physics show they are mistaken. Duplicity, deceit, false promises, health-scams and stupidity, beyond a certain point, are only fit or merciless satire or the law courts.

ETA 8 aug 2010:

It really is true that I write in pain and with "fatigue", all because I'm so extra-ordinarily stupid to have been thinking myself ill since I started studying pyschology 32 years ago (a study I eventually finished with the best possible marks). Or that is what professor Wessely wants you to believe: I am mad iff he is sane for that would save his paymasters a lot of money or at least it clearly warms the cockles of Wessely's heart to denigrate, defame and hurt people as much as he possibly can, whenever given a chance:

"The mild and the long-suffering may suffer forever in this world.
As long as the patient will suffer, the cruel will kick."
     -- Sidney Smith

For professor Wessely is a medical sadist, if I did read my psychological, logical, philosophy of science and methodological literature well, which I think my degrees assure me I must have, and use medical and psychoanalytic terminology in a proper scientific way. (***) From Studies in MEdical Sadism - 7: Professor Simon Wessely's many mental issues (P.S.) accompanied with relevant evidence

Professor Wessely empirically & analytically investigating the true cause of the BS about CFS, while also laying the intellecual analytical foundations of the Lying ProcessTM ; the wholistically integrated WHEEWHEE TechniqueTM that heals anything problematic in the wink of an eye with tapping, the Nobel Prize worthy EFT TechniqueTM:

"There's a small number of people
who are almost psychotically obsessed with me.

But I'm used to that.
"
(
professor Simon Wessely)

although it may be feared by some optimists his sight and mind are so dark that he can't see it for what it really is. (Fraudian Analysis, BS-powered+CBT-ified & GET-activated!)

Anyway... the nominal cause for this ETA is that I rectified some typos my disfunctonal belief systems convinced themselves not to see before.

P.P.S. It may be I have to stop Nederlog for a while. The reason is that I am physically not well at all. I don't know yet, but if there is no Nederlog, now you know the reason.

Have its deaf waves not heard my agony?
Ah me! alas, pain, pain ever, forever!

(*) It so happens I specialized on philosophy of science and logic, and have an M.A. in psychology. So yes: I can argue to the purpose and have done so, and see the links I have provided for some of it.

(**) A devious doublebind or catch 22 as any (and check out these Wikipedia-links, if you didn't know about these ways to get or be knotted or confused into insanity):

(***) Having now both seen and heard professor Wessely on videos on Youtube and read his prose, I can confidentally affirm that Wessely will never dare to confront me in any personal spoken or written debate, unless I am almost dead and had several brain seizures.

But I am sure willing to give him a go, publicly or in court, if anybody cares to arrange it, such as KCL-s Board of Directors, who should get rid of this psychiatric freak filled to the brim with issues. Or is that concept - that many a wonky student who succeeded getting a basic medical degree specialized in psychiatry because he has major issues to compensate - too difficult to get for the KCL-s Board?
